Bangalore Metro Expanding Rapidly for Better Connectivity
Bangalore Metro Expanding Rapidly for Better Connectivity

Bangalore Metro is rapidly expanding its network to improve connectivity in the city. It was the first city in southern India to have metro rail connectivity, and now it covers most of the city. The system is operated by the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), a joint venture of the Government of India and the Karnataka government.
The metro network is divided into different phases, and several upcoming stations and routes are planned for future expansion. In October 2023, the Purple Line, which connects Challaghatta to Kadugodi (Whitefield), was inaugurated, providing connectivity between the eastern and western parts of the city. This section has 37 stations and the total travel time is approximately 80 minutes.
Bangalore Metro is also set to undergo a major expansion under Phase 4, with a proposed addition of 129 km to its network. This expansion aims to improve connectivity in far-flung and suburban areas of the city. However, it has been noted that some of the proposed lines do not align with the approved Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) drafted by BMRCL in 2020.
In addition to the upcoming phases, Namma Metro Phase 3 is expected to begin construction this year. It will consist of three metro corridors with a total length of 81.12 km. The first line will be constructed from Hebbal to JP Nagar, while the second line will cover areas such as Gorguntepalya, Magadi Road, Mysuru Road, and JP Nagar. The remaining length of Phase 3 will connect Hosahalli to Magadi Road and then to Kadabagere, covering the entire Outer Ring Road.
The BMRCL is also planning to extend the metro network to four outlying towns: Doddaballapur, Nelamangala, Devanahalli, and Hoskote. This expansion will further improve connectivity in the surrounding areas.
Overall, the Bangalore Metro is on track to significantly expand its network and provide better connectivity for the residents of the city. It is expected to reach a total of 314 km of metro connectivity by 2041.
